Open Source in GSM Could Breed Mobile Mayhem
Mobile malware may grow as a security threat this year, but security researcher Ralf-Philipp Weinmann says there’s a worse threat lurking around — the GSM baseband system. The threat from hacking GSM baseband systems has been largely ignored, Weinmann reportedly told the audience at a presentation at the Black Hat security conference in Washington, D.C., Monday.

Zombie Bites is a gory retro platformer — Time Waster
So, you’re a zombie. And you’re hungry, and you’re all pixelated. You’re going to stay pixelated and retro-looking, at least on this game. But you don’t have to stay hungry: In Zombie Bites, you run around the level, finding humans. As soon as you touch a human and press SPACE, you attack. Your energy bar fills up a bit, but not so much. You must keep running and jumping in search of more humans you can eat.
“What’s the problem?”, I hear you say, “That screenshot is full of humans”. No it’s not – those are zombies! As we’ve all learned in science class, once a zombie bites a human, the human turns into a zombie. And that’s exactly what happens in Zombie Bites, so you find yourself running around the level searching for the few remaining humans amongst a growing horde of zombies, which are busy biting those same humans you’re trying to catch. Hectic!
It’s not exactly an epic quest, but it’s a cute game, especially if you’re into zombies. The 8-bit style makes the gore seem kind of fetching, really.

Windows 7 SP1 download due today, says Microsoft Technet post

We reported earlier that the release of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 could be coming soon. Its impending arrival seemed to be heralded by the availability of a prerequisite installer update delivered recently via Windows Update. Now, however, there’s an indication that we could be just hours away from being able to download Windows 7 SP1.
A Microsoft Technet blog — albeit a Russian one we’ve had to run through translation sites — indicates that “pack will be publicly available tomorrow.” The post discusses virtualization improvements in Windows 7 SP1 and Server 2008 R2 SP1 and was published January 13, 2011. If the author’s statement is accurate, that would definitely make today SP1 release day.
Update: According to Tom Warren at WinRumors, the public download isn’t coming today. Rather, the original post was announcing the availability of the Windows 7 SP1 RTM to OEMs today.

CorelDRAW video tutorial: Make a Polaroid-like image in five minutes
When most people hear the words “vector graphics”, the first thing that comes to mind is Adobe Illustrator. While Illustrator is a wonderful application, it’s certainly not the only game in town: I’ve been using CorelDRAW for several years now, and I just love it.
I’m not a graphics pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do need to turn out a few pretty pixels here and there for my day job. If you’re just thinking about getting into vector graphics, or if you’ve tried Illustrator and it proved too daunting, CorelDRAW might be just what you need.
Rather than just talk about CorelDRAW or write a tutorial, I figured it would be best to show it off in a short video. I took an image of my awesome cat, Ivan, and made it into a Polaroid-like snapshot. It took me less than five minutes, without any templates or saved settings. To see how I did it, hit Play after the fold.
By the way, this is the first of four CorelDRAW tutorials to be published in the next few weeks. If you’d like to see specific aspects of CorelDRAW in action, feel free to let me know in the comments!

LauncherPro for Android hands-on: it works, but it won’t wow you
The most popular home screen and ‘app drawer’ replacement app for Android is LauncherPro — but I’m not sure why.
I mean, sure, it gives you a scrolling dock, and up to seven home screens — big whoop. Maybe I’m just a bit jaded. I have recently reviewed two very good home screen apps, after all. The truth is, though, except for a nifty scrolling, customizable dock, there’s simply no reason to use LauncherPro instead of ADW.Launcher — and Zeam, which is lighter-weight and easier to use, also has a very nice scrolling dock.
In fact, the only unique feature in LauncherPro costs $3, and you can’t even try it out before you buy.

Sony sues iPhone jailbreaker Geohot over PS3 firmware 3.55 hack
Seems like it’s PlayStation morning! Just two days after the release of a PlayStation 3 jailbreak for firmware version 3.55, Sony is suing the creators — one of which is none other than Geohot (pictured right), of iPhone limera1n jailbreak infamy. Both the root keys that made the jailbreak possible, and the jailbreak itself, have been removed from Geohot’s website, pending a decision from the courts.
What’s odd, though, is that this jailbreak doesn’t allow pirated games to be run on the PlayStation 3; rather, it’s simply aimed at allowing the homebrew community to install their own custom packages. Ultimately, Geohot wants to bring back the “install another OS” option, which Sony removed back in March 2010 — but now we’ll have to wait for the resolution of the court case to see if it’s possible.
The legal documents are available from Geohot’s website (but it’s starting to get pretty slow!) There’s also a video of the jailbreak in action after the break.

How to make only part of a cell bold in Microsoft Excel

This week’s series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.
By default, when you click a cell in Excel and hit Ctrl+B or the B button on the toolbar, the entire text of the cell becomes bold. However, sometimes you may want to make just part of the text bold, and not the whole thing.
To do this, simply start editing the cell by hitting F2. Select the text you’d like to make bold, and hit Ctrl+B. This will make only this part of the cell bold.
You can use this same technique to color specific words in the cell: Select one or two words while editing a cell, and use the Font Color button to change their color.

Lenovo’s Chinese eBox console suffers delay, here’s how its camera-based games might play (video)
We had nearly forgotten Lenovo’s Eedoo spinoff and its China-bound video game console, seeing as how it failed to meet a planned November 2010 unveiling, but IDG News reports that the motion-sensing eBox hasn’t slipped Lenovo’s mind — it’s just been pushed further into 2011. How far? If we were to guess, we’d say Q2 2011, and the video above spells out why. Seemingly by coincidence, we were just sent this footage of a game called Flyimal, built on the Unity Engine as a collaboration between 3D asset company Mixamo and 3D gesture recognition company Omek Interactive, and — get this — running on “the first [console] to be made by the Chinese for the Chinese market and due for launch by Q2 of this year.” We can’t think of many game systems that fit that description, to be honest. There’s not a lot to look at here, but we imagine PrimeSense and competitors will be perusing the video soon, noting that the machine captures precisely 15 points on a user’s body for its gesture recognition algorithms… and wondering if there’s a third dimension to any of that movement. Read Unity, Mixamo and Omek’s statement after the break.

Ubuntu 11.04 officially switches default media player to Banshee
That’s finally happened, as current builds of Ubuntu 11.04 have finally made the switch to Banshee. If you’re not familiar with Banshee, it’s a full-featured media player. It supports a number of audio and video formats, can sync with Android and iOS devices, offers built-in MP3 purchases via Amazon and eMusic, and sports Last.fm and Wikipedia integration.
OMG! Ubuntu ran a poll a few months ago, and user preference was pretty evenly divided between Rhythmbox and Banshee, but Canonical’s Mark Shuttleworth has previously stated that “Ubuntu is not a Democracy.” If they’ve decided to add Banshee to the mix, it’s getting added — but anyone who might be upset by that probably knows how to quickly remove it and install Rhythmbox via a terminal session anyway.

Trend Micro thinks Android’s open source makes it less secure than iOS; wrong!

In an odd move that must surely raise concerns of lucidity, the Trend Micro chairman, Steve Chang, has claimed that the open-source nature of Android makes it easier to hack than iOS: “Android is open-source, which means the hacker can also understand the underlying architecture and source code.”
News just in: the open-source-is-less-secure myth was dispelled more than a decade ago. Take a look at Linux, Apache, Firefox, or Chrome — four huge open-source projects, and all many times more secure than their closed-source brethren (Windows, IIS, Internet Explorer). Open source projects are more secure than closed-source projects due to peer and code review, and vested interest! Trend Micro fails to appreciate that while maybe a handful of people have seen the iOS source, thousands have eyeballed Android’s innards to look for bugs. Don’t forget that Android is also based on Linux, which must be one of the most rigorously tested pieces of software ever made.
Later in the interview, Chang even goes on to mention the iOS sandbox “that isolates the platform”… which Android also has!
Anyway, Chang’s ultimate point is that as smartphones become more intrinsic to our everyday life, their security becomes an ever-growing concern. Smartphones need to be treated as real computers, and locked down in the same way; either by the platform, or with third-party software. There will come a point, in the next few years, when smartphone OSes receive even more attention from malware authors than Windows — we need to be ready.

There’s a set of speakers, front-facing camera, and a micro-USB port, which will no doubt handle the charging and file transfer duties. Activate specific windows in Windows 7 with a taskbar keyboard shortcut

This week, we’re running a series of keyboard tips and tricks that help you make the most of Windows 7. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.
The Windows 7 taskbar has large, chunky icons. They’re easy to hit with the mouse, but what’s nicer still is that they’re easy to count. You can easily see what’s the third icon, for example, and so, hitting Win+3 would be like clicking that icon. That means if the application isn’t running yet, Win+3 is going to run it; and if it already is running, Win+3 will switch between all open instances of that application, and even pop up a neat Aero Peek pane next to the taskbar, showing you thumbnails of all of the instances you’re switching between. If have a few apps pinned to your taskbar and don’t switch their order very often, very soon you’ll know their numbers by heart, and using Win+Number could become second nature.
Come back tomorrow for the next keyboard tip, or, if you’d like to read a whole bunch at once, check out Sebastian’s epic list.

How to customize the Ribbon menu in Microsoft Office 2010

This week’s series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.
While earlier this week I’ve shown you how to keep the Ribbon from getting in your way, that’s not all you can do with it in Office 2010. Back when the Ribbon interface first came out, in Office 2007, it wasn’t really customizable. You could modify it if you were lucky enough to know VBA (Visual Basic for Applications, Office’s built-in programming language), but otherwise, you were pretty much stuck with the stock arrangement of tabs and buttons.
Fortunately, with Office 2010, Microsoft introduced a simple way to customize the Ribbon, requiring no programming at all. Simply go to the File menu, click Options and then select Customize Ribbon. You’ll get a two-pane dialog, showing all available commands versus your existing ribbon, and letting you toggle things on and off and re-arrange them as you see fit.
The best part is that once you’re done customizing your setup, you can easily export it for backup or to take with you to your other computers. Just click the Import/Export button and select Export all customizations.

Focus the taskbar and switch windows with the arrow keys in Windows 7

This week, we’re running a series of keyboard tips and tricks that help you make the most of Windows 7. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.
The taskbar seems like it was meant to be used with the mouse only; it’s a very visual thing, especially in Windows 7. But it turns out there’s a way to “switch” to the taskbar and then work with it using the keyboard only! Hit Win+T to focus the taskbar, and then use the arrow keys to cycle between the icons. Whenever the focus switches to an application that’s currently running, its Aero Peek pane will show up. To start an application that isn’t running, press Enter.
What’s nice about this system is that it takes your taskbar’s orientations into account: for a vertical taskbar, Up/Down will switch windows, while Left/Right would activate the Aero Peek thumbnail pane; for a horizontal one, Left/Right would switch windows and Up/Down would activate the thumbnail pane.
This little nugget concludes our weekly Keyboard Tips series. I hope you’ve enjoyed it, and maybe even learned some new tricks! Check out Sebastian’s list for a comprehensive rundown of many other hotkeys.

Microsoft leaving two vulnerabilties in Internet Explorer 8 unpatched
On the upcoming Patch Tuesday, Microsoft will not be issuing a fix for a critical IE8 vulnerability discovered in December. If that wasn’t bad enough, a vulnerability in Internet Explorer 8 discovered by a Google security researcher will also go unaddressed.
The second bug was only discovered yesterday, so perhaps Microsoft simply hasn’t had a chance to work out a fix yet — but the first flaw has already been exploited, and seen in the wild! Microsoft even admits it has seen targeted attacks, yet no fix is forthcoming.
The Google security researcher, incidentally, is concerned that third parties in China might also know about his recently-discovered vulnerability. In a beautiful twist of irony, one of his fellow researchers uploaded some data that revealed the exploit — and moments later, the GoogleBot indexed the data, allowing two IP addresses in China to simply search for it.

iPad 2 cases surface, rekindle SD card slot fire and add a pinch of mystery with topside cutout
There’s usually as much fun to be had before an Apple product launch as there is after, and this upcoming iPad 2 device is no exception. The latest scuttlebutt it has succumbed to comes courtesy of some cases that have cropped up in China — AppleInsider and MIC Gadget have independently found iPad 2 shells that feature nearly identical cutouts — with the resulting allegations pointing toward a rear-facing camera, an SD card slot, and perhaps even a Mini DisplayPort receptacle. Our own sources have confirmed the former two, but the latter, a miniaturized video output already featured in MacBooks, is a new development and less of a certainty. Then again, looking at the size of the hole leaves few alternative options (and a USB slot is extremely unlikely), so we’re willing to believe that a Mini DisplayPort will be an inclusion Apple makes for the sake of offering choice — even if it prefers you to send your video streams over an untethered AirPlay connection.

So if you like cows and encounter a bunch of cows that are on the verge of drowning, you might be moved to save them –and that’s pretty much the premise of Freaky Cows.
You get a queue of objects and when you click the screen, the next object appears. The first thing on every level is some sort of a floating platform – it may be a long plank, or a bunch of logs loosely bunched together (these can float apart, as you can see in the screenshot).
Once the first floating object is in the water, the next click usually drops a cow on it, and it happily floats. Of course, saving just one cow isn’t enough. Cows are social creatures, so you have to save the whole herd. When you drop the next cow on the floating plank, it changes the balance and causes the plank to sink deeper into the water. If you’re not careful, the whole plank might tip over — and there go the cows! You may receive extra planks later on, which you can use to bolster up your platform.
There are bulls, too, and a bull weighs four times as much as a cow — so you need to be extra-careful with them. Happily, though, you don’t have to save every cow. I mean, every cow is precious, but you can usually get away with saving only nine out of twelve or so and still pass the level.
Freaky Cows is highly recommended, and I greatly enjoyed the frantic mooing in the soundtrack.

Wine 1.3.11 released, improves JavaScript performance and localization, fixes MS Hearts bug
The development version of Wine 1.3 has just been released, bringing with it a ton of bug fixes, improved JavaScript performance, and — at long last — GNU gettext support, making localization and translation a whole lot easier.
For many Linux users, though, Wine 1.3.11 will be known as the build that finally fixed MS Hearts, which has been broken under Wine since 2006. Of course, there is a Hearts clone, but it just isn’t the same. The improved JavaScript performance means that JavaScript-heavy pages should run a bit better in Internet Explorer — though why a Linux user would use Internet Explorer is truly a puzzler.
Binary packages for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and other major distros should be available; but if not, you can always build from source.

Facebook enables one-click identity theft option for rogue application developers
In a rather odd and haphazard move, Facebook has now made it possible for apps to read your home address and mobile telephone number.
In the “Request for Permission” window — the one you have to accept before using an app on the Facebook platform — look out for “Access my contact information”, with the subtitle “Current Address and Mobile Phone Number” (see image above). You’d think that such important details would deserve a bolder warning, instead of the usual faded gray — but obviously not.
As Sophos’ Naked Security blog points out, making such details available in a landscape that is already packed full of rogue spam and scam applications puts Facebook users at even greater risk. With your full name and home address, identity theft basically becomes a no-brainer — and can you imagine the SMS spam that awaits the unlucky Facebooker that gives his phone number to the wrong app developer?
Still, even if you’re not bothered by this (and you can always remove your home address or mobile number from Facebook), you have wonder what Facebook will do next. Facebook is quickly becoming The One True Internet Hub, and the wealth of data it knows about us is terrifying. If access to incredibly sensitive data can be reduced to a small-font subtitle in a cluttered permission box, it’s only a matter of time until you accidentally press “Allow” and fritter away your entire life story to a random rogue developer.

HTC 7 Pro now available on O2 Germany, ?22 monthly or ?599 up front
Not that we had any reason to doubt O2 Germany’s Twitter account, but a formal press release does help ease our few concerns. The HTC 7 Pro is now official on the European carrier for the asking price of €29 down and 24 months of €22.50. If you want to rip the proverbial band-aid off faster, it’s also available for a €599 flat fee — both of those without SIM lock. The rest of the world? We imagine it’s just a matter of time before HTC offers this through its other channels.

Zeam hands on: a lightweight and minimalist Android launcher
It’s always amazed me how phones, with processors that are hundreds of times more powerful than early computers, can lag. You know what I mean: head into your address book and try to find a contact while your phone is still booting up, or loading a website. It’s pathetic, really. One solution is to put faster and faster CPUs in phones, but the alternative is to strip out some of the heavier elements and replace them with light-weight, faster alternatives — like Zeam Launcher.
Zeam switches out your home screen and apps list with minimalistic, snappier replacements. It supports Live Wallpapers, and rather excitingly opens up programmable bindings swipe up, swipe down and double tap. With Zeam, you’ll never have to hit the ‘home’ button — just swipe down!

Nokia kills off Comes With Music in all but 6 countries

Nokia’s experiment with the OVI Unlimited Music service — which the company branded as “Comes With Music” on many of its handsets — is winding down. A Nokia spokesperson has stated that the service just hasn’t gained enough traction to keep it going. Competition from other services — like Spotify and iTunes — ultimately proved to be too much in certain markets. Unlimited Music will still be available in a handful of countries, however (just 6 out of 33). Nokia will continue to offer 1-year subscriptions in China, India and Indonesia, and 6-month subs in Brazil, South Africa, and Turkey.
Users who currently hold an active subscription will be able to download music until their service runs out — and will always be able to listen to their downloaded songs. Nokia has also stated that the decision to “rethink” Unlimited Music won’t affect the OVI Music Store or other music-related services it is currently developing.

Tick! is a fun, simple timer for Android
A timer is one of those essential applications a phone must have; note that I’m not even saying “smartphone,” but just about any phone, even the lowliest S60 Nokia phone, has a very usable timer accessible right from the ‘main screen.’
There are a ton of timers available for Android, but most use the stock UI controls and emphasize features like multiple timers, saved presets, and others I don’t really need. What I need is a fun, fast way to set up a timer and be able to move on. Tick! fits the bill quite perfectly.
The UI looks kind of like an old six-shooter cylinder. You just turn the big dial around, and the minutes on the slider increment. Once you dial in the duration you want to count down from, just hit the big green ‘ON’ button in the middle, and the timer starts counting down.
It’s accurate down to a single minute. The only flaw I found is that, by default, it uses your phone’s ringtone to alert you when the timer is up, so it sounds just like you’re getting a phone call. Luckily, this can be changed. Quite a neat little free app, and as usual, you can find the QR code right after the jump.

Google Tasks top 5 user-requested features announced

A while back, Google asked users of Google Tasks to submit their most wanted features. The polls have closed, so to speak, and Google has announced the top five (in no specific order):
- a Tasks API and synchronization
- reminders and notifications
- recurring tasks
- shareable task lists
- visual distinction for overdue tasks
Perhaps more importantly than merely announcing the top picks is the fact that associate product manager David Tattersall states that Google is getting ready to build these new features into Tasks. Tattersall doesn’t offer a timetable, only stating that changes to Tasks will arrive “throughout the year.”

Nimball Rewind is a mechanical platformer with time travel — Time Waster
In platformers, the protagonist often makes all the difference. I mean, look at how cool Mario is, or how cute Sonic the Hedgehog can be. In Nimball Rewind, the protagonist is just a ball. It rolls and bonces around, but there’s not much of an emotional connection there, if you know what I mean. But after all, this is a game, not a match-making service. And as a game, it’s pretty darn fun!
Each level is quite short. A gripper arm drops you from the ceiling, and you need to roll and bounce until you reach your destination – a gripper arm resting face-up, that you can fall or jump into. In the screenshot you see me trying to leap into the gripper at the end of level 11. That square to the left is a “bouncer platform” (my name, not theirs). When you touch it, it launches you upwards. That can be a good thing, like here, or it can be quite bad, if the ceiling happens to be red. Red surfaces, in general, are “toxic” in this game – you’re not allowed to touch them.
What happens when you do, though? This is where “time travel” comes in. Basically, rather than strike out, you can hit SPACE and rewind a bit, kind of like an Undo function [Hello, Braid... -Ed]. When you let go of the SPACE key, gameplay immediately resumes. But you don’t get infinite retries, though: touch enough red walls, and eventually you’ll have to start the level from the top. All in all, quite a fun platformer!
P.S: You can double-jump (jump while you’re in the air). Took me a few minutes to figure that out.

Facebook valued at $50 billion by massive Goldman Sachs investment, IPO expected soon
With an investment of $450 million by investment bank Goldman Sachs, Facebook has just increased its valuation to $50 billion, placing it above Yahoo and eBay, but still some way off giants Google, Oracle, Apple and Microsoft.
Back in November, Mark Zuckerberg dispelled claims that an IPO was in Facebook’s immediate future, but these continuing, massive private investments would suggest that an IPO should occur this year, or perhaps in 2012. It all comes down to whether the Securities and Exchange Commission let Facebook — and other private Internet companies like Twitter and Zynga — dilute their shares using “special purpose vehicles.”
Goldman Sachs, which underwrote the IPOs of Yahoo and Microsoft, and coordinated many others, is a bit of a technology IPO veteran. With this investment it has likely secured its position to take Facebook public — and when that happens, it’s anyone’s guess as to how much Facebook will be valued at.

Children checking out vintage gadgets continues to be an enthralling experience to watch
The video we’ve embedded after the break has been around for a few weeks, but we simply couldn’t resist posting it. As you’ll see, it’s a video (in French, but with English subtitles) of children contemplating a ton of vintage gear including the Game Boy, a Colecovision cartridge, and several sizes and shapes of computer discs. Their reactions — especially if you were alive when most or all of these gadgets were the cutting edge — is pretty incredible. Like we said, the video (with some pretty clunky subtitles) is after the break.

Windows 7 SP1 RTM download coming soon?

Over at WinRumors, Tom Warren postulates that the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 download will be arriving soon. In addition to the general availability of an SP1 blocker tool since November, Warren notes that a patch delivered Tuesday updates the installation software in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The knowledgebase article states “The installation software is the component that handles the installation and the removal of software updates, language packs, optional Windows features, and service packs” — so an update to it would certainly lay the groundwork for a big-time update like a service pack.
Microsoft, of course, only states that Windows 7 SP1 will arrive “in the first half of 2011.” While January certainly fits that description, we’ll just have to sit tight and wait for the download to go live. It took about 6 months for Vista SP1 to go from beta to RTM, and Windows 7 SP1 went beta in July — which would make January right on schedule if Microsoft is trying to stick to a similar timeline.

Enable tethering on your Palm Pre or Pixi with FreeTether
If you’ve been waiting for an easier way to tether your webOS phone and share its mobile data connection, the webOS Internals team has some good news for you. FreeTether has gone into beta, and that’s exactly what the app is designed to do.
Once installed, you simply fire up FreeTether, select which interface(s) you want to enable, and configure its options. After that, all you’ve got to worry about is keeping an eye on your data usage so you don’t get dinged by your carrier.
PreCentral reports that the tethered connection feels a bit slow at this point, but this is just the first release. webOS Internals has developed plenty of other great apps for the platform, so expect to see FreeTether improve dramatically in coming updates.
FreeTether is homebrew, so you’ll need to make yourself familiar with how to install non-Catalog apps on your device via PreWare. It’s a simple process, and there’s no risk of bricking your phone — so head on over to PreCentral for step-by-step instructions. You’ll also need to add the testing feed to PreWare.

US opts to derez virtual fence along Mexico border, replacing it with more affordable measures
Remember that hugely ambitious “virtual fence” that the US Homeland Security department was so keen on blowing a few billion dollars on? Well, following a bunch of setbacks and delays in its development, it’s now been determined to be too darn expensive and is being scrapped. That’s not without splashing some cash, however, as it’s estimated that a billion dollars has already been spent on installing sensor towers along a 53-mile stretch of the Arizona border with Mexico. The plan now is to redirect funds to more conventional (and commercially available) surveillance measures, such as thermal imaging and unmanned aerial drones, which is estimated to cost $750 million to cover the remaining 323 miles of Arizona’s border. Whatever happens, keeping illegal immigration and contraband smuggling to a minimum isn’t going to be a cheap task. Almost makes you wonder if this isn’t a problem better solved by non-technological means.

Aequilibrium 3 challenges your mousing agility and sense of balance — Time Waster
Back in June, I covered the original Aequilibrium; if you liked that game, then you’re going to love the new version, Aequilibrium 3.
It’s a game that’s ostensibly about balance, but it’s really about agility. Each level starts off with several pieces resting in perfect balance on a fulcrum. You have to remove all of the red blocks by clicking them, while keeping the whole thing from toppling down and off the screen.
For example, in the level shown above you should probably click the two middle triangles one after the other (the chunky ones, in the middle). Then click the two top ones one after the other, each in rapid succession. And then you’re left with the two bottom ones (hopefully, unless everything fell off the fulcrum by now). That’s the trickiest part, and you need quite a bit of speed to keep it all from falling.
It’s not entirely about speed, though; there is some strategy involved, but a deft mouse-hand will certainly come in handy for this one.

Strait Power turbine is water-powered, shark-inspired (video)
The basking shark, with its five foot jaw, is one of the most ferocious looking critters that ever swam the sea. However, it’s pretty much harmless, just filtering out tiny bits and leaving idle dippers and their water wings alone. This is what served as the inspiration for Anthony Reale, who turned that gaping maw into Strait Power. It’s effectively a double-nozzle that fits around a hydro turbine or two, turning the flow of water into electrical power, boosting the efficiency of the turbine by creating areas of high pressure ahead and low pressure behind, as visualized above. The result was a 40 percent boost in efficiency — and some soggy jeans, as you can see in the videos below. The first gives a quick overview, the second an uber-detailed discussion of the development from start to finish. Choose your path.

Motorola i886 runs some form of Android — without a touchscreen?
Let’s first off start by saying we have no idea what, exactly the recently announced Motorola i886 is running other then to say it’s some form Android. With that out of the way, what you’re looking at is apparently some sort of frankendroid built by Motorola and destined for Sprints iDen network. It has very few "normal" Android apps built into it and as noted by Phone Scoop’s in-store hands-on, it appears to be running a J2ME virtual machine that allows for installation of apps through a GetJar application. The thought for this is that it is designed to be the first non-touch based Android device since it has none of the normal touch based apps loaded onto it but thus far Motorola and Sprint are staying hush on the matter. Video can be found after the break, if you dare. [PhoneScoop]

Vudu movie streaming app is (not) live on the Boxee Box – update
There’s no official confirmation from Boxee’s blog or Twitter account yet, but owners of its Box are experiencing a fully activated Vudu app with the SD, HD, HDX and 3D streams the service is famous for. The only glitches reported so far seem to have been cleared up by just restarting the device so hopefully whatever delayed its launch past the planned 2010 window is entirely resolved. There’s no firmware update needed, so give it a shot if you haven’t already, especially since Vudu’s still offering a free flick for all new signups. With Netflix streaming still an unreachable dream for its Box (unless one also happens to own practically any other media streaming device on the market) we hope the company rewards its developers with a long, long break of at least five minutes before sending them back to work on our Watch Instantly access.
[Thanks, Parris]
Update: VP of Marketing Andrew Kippen has let us know that while the app was released to a few hundred testers “by mistake” it’s been taken down so they can finish testing before it is eventually released “with much fanfare.” Sorry Boxee devs, no five minute break for you today!

Apple nears ten billion downloads in App Store, should hit it without Verizon’s help
For whatever reason, Apple has a thing with ten billion. The outfit served up its ten billionth iTune right around this time last year, and more importantly, served its one billionth app in April of 2009. In just 1.5 years, the company has seen that figure soar nearly tenfold, which is impressive no matter how you slice it. Of course, we’re quite curious to know if this includes duplicate downloads, app updates and just free or paid apps, but regardless, there’s no question that Cupertino (and quite a few developers) are raking it in. Of course, the explosion of the iPad certainly helped boost the download frequency, and if we had to guess, we’d say it’ll take even less time to double up this milestone. You know, once next month happens. Oh, and if you get lucky enough, you could score a $10,000 iTunes gift card if you just so happen to download the ten billionth app — make sure it’s a good one.
[Thanks, Ali]

Android getting Google Music sync in Gingerbread?
Google’s been teasing cloud-based music features in Android since its I/O conference last year, and the recent leak of a revamped first-party Music app suggests that the plans haven’t evaporated into thin air. Here’s the latest tidbit: GizmoFusion claims that this screen shot comes from a device running Gingerbread, clearly showing “Music” as one of the accounts configured in Android’s settings, which suggests that the system will be pretty deeply-integrated to sync your tracks just as it would your Twitter updates, your Facebook friends, or your calendar entries. Note that we don’t have any new evidence beyond this one shot — and we need to take GizmoFusion‘s word that this is a Gingerbread device — but we’re wondering if maybe this isn’t one of the new features in that Android 2.4 build we’ve been hearing a lot about lately.

Notion Ink Adam clears FCC, begins shipping ‘around Wednesday’
We don’t see it in the FCC database yet but Notion Ink’s charming Rohan Shravan just penned a post on the company’s blog with news that Adam has official clearance from the US government. That’s right, after several delays the tiny startup will finally condense its occasionally vapory molecules into a solid slab of shipping tablet starting “around Wednesday” after the hardware receives its FCC tattoo. Remember, Adam was that tablet good enough to earn a Best of CES 2011 honorable mention at an event absolutely flooded with tablets from a who’s who of consumer electronics companies. While our first impressions of the production unit were positive, we’re holding off on making a final judgement until we’ve had the chance to perform a full review. Having said that, Adam’s final NI3421A01 product code is so nerdy — the “3421″ continues Rohan’s tradition of numbering product iterations along the Fibonacci number sequence — that we’re almost tempted to place an order ourselves. Almost.

Cubeduel Goes Viral Too Quickly, Stumbles Over LinkedIn API Limits
Yesterday we ran a post about Cubeduel, a service that mixes the best (or worst) of Hot or Not with LinkedIn. Fire up the site and it will show you photos of two coworkers ? pick the one you’d prefer to work with, and Cubeduel will present you with another pair of photos. It’s addictive, a bit evil, and has skyrocketed in usage over the last few days since it launched. Unfortunately, it took off a bit too quickly. The service went down earlier today for reasons that were initially unclear ? did LinkedIn block the site because it ranks coworkers in a way that isn’t exactly flattering to everyone, or did the site just get too popular, too fast? Turns out it’s the latter ? Cubeduel has exceeded LinkedIn’s API limits (which is what one of the site’s creators, Tony Wright, initially guessed). Here’s an explanation from LinkedIn Director of Communications Hani Durzy:

Shazam plugs Spotify into its iOS and Android apps
Shazam and Spotify have announced a new partnership, and the result is a new feature in the Shazam premium apps for iOS and Android. Once Shazam has identified that song for you, you’ll be able to tap to listen to it immediately in Spotify. Play in Spotify will also be added to Shazam’s free apps at some point in the near future.
That sounds great, but it sure would be nice if more of us could actually use a feature like that. After all, Spotify is still struggling to launch in the U.S., and we’re guessing that Canada isn’t even on the radar yet. Currently you’ll only be able to enjoy Play in Spotify if you’re in the UK, Sweden, Norway, Finland, France, Spain and the Netherlands.

In the good old days of tech media, Microsoft led the charge in impossibly convoluted contortions around self-interested maneuvers. Today Google has taken over that role. And the new Microsoft stands as a pale shadow of itself, fighting tooth and nail to rescue defeat from the jaws of victory. With Steve Ballmer as Donald Trump: Nice job, Bob. You?re fired. As we found out on today?s Gillmor Gang, Google is being called on a transparent bluff. Namely, that yanking H.264 from Chrome is all about the open Web. That WebM will stop Apple from eating the heart out of Android and Chrome and maybe YouTube. Already Google is re-explaining the move. But not soon enough to stop Danny Sullivan, Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, John Taschek and me from having some fun on the Gang this week. Kudos to Microsoft and Google for their hard work this week. Time Warner, Disney and News Corp. bigwigs speak up against FCC stipulations in Comcast-NBC deal
Hello, inevitable. It simply had to happen, and now, it is. As Comcast, NBC and the FCC attempt to work out stipulations over Comcast’s proposed 51 percent buyout of NBC Universal, a smattering of major media companies are paying close attention to the play-by-play. Naturally, the precedents that are set from this deal will affect future agreements of this caliber, and lobbyists for both Disney and News Corp. (as well as Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes) aren’t standing over on the sidelines any longer. All three outfits have reportedly been “voicing their concerns this week with the FCC, worried that such conditions could undermine their own efforts to profit from the nascent online video industry.”
We’re told that the media mega-corps are worried that the rules — if hammered down — could interfere with ongoing negotiations with online video providers, and in turn, give them less leverage to monetize and control their content on the world wide web. In other words, if NBC Universal is forced to provide content fluidly to all ISPs (and not just Comcast), what’s to say other content makers and internet providers wouldn’t also be forced into similar deals, regardless of whether or not they’re involved in takeover negotiations? Needless to say, we’re nowhere near the end of this journey, and while the nuts and bolts are pretty dry to think about, the outcomes could have a serious impact on our future viewing habits.

Getaround app turns you into Enterprise, lets your rent out your dormant whip
Oh, sure — you’re making much use of that Zipcar app already, but what if the tables were turned somewhat? For suburbanites with two cars in the garage (one of which is collecting major dust), Getaround’s mobile app allows you to be Zipcar. Put simply, those with a spare vehicle (or a vehicle that routinely stays parked for certain blocks of time each day) can load their vehicle, location, schedule and price into the app, and then nearby Earthlings can poke around and see what’s on offer. If they’re interested in taking your ride for a spin, they can hit you up via the app and agree on how many hours / days / weeks they’ll be needing it. In essence, you’re looking at peer-to-peer car sharing, with Getaround snagging 30 percent of the rental rate; speaking of rate, that can range between $4 and $25 per hour, with the owner setting the price. Those based in San Francisco can tap into the source link to become involved in the beta, and don’t be shocked if you see a Tesla Roadster listed for $25/hour — that’s actually one of Getaround’s first customers, and you can rest assured that red beauty will be calling your name this weekend.
