Audi Auto Union Type C e-tron study puts your pow-pow-Power Wheels to shame
Top speed of 18mph, and a range of 15 miles? Charges in only two hours? No, this isn’t the future of transportation we’re talking about here, it’s a toy. A toy from Audi, of all places. The company has created this electric-powered and half-scale recreation of an Auto Union Type C, grand prix racer of the late 1930s, and done it in e-tron guise, applying the moniker from its grown-up line of EVs, like the luscious e-tron Spyder. This one’s intended for kids of all ages — so long as they’re shorter than 5’11” — and it will be on display at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg. At this point there’s no mention of a plan to produce it nor a price if Audi did, but surely it’s one of those “if you have to ask” things — that body is entirely made of carbon fiber, and that stuff doesn’t come cheap.

Apple brings AT&T and Verizon together for a happy dance in latest iPhone commercial (update: HD video)
The unthinkable has happened. After spending 99 percent of their recent marketing budgets figuring out ways to sling mud at each other, AT&T and Verizon have now come together to dance a merry waltz — all in the name of Apple’s hallowed iPhone. The latest commercial for the phone that really doesn’t need advertising shows that you can FaceTime, read iBooks, navigate maps, and do everything else on the Verizon iPhone just as well as you could do it on the AT&T-friendly GSM variant of the device. As if you didn’t already know. Still, it’s fun to see these guys trying to turn their lack of competitive diversity into some sort of an advantage. Video after the break.
Update: Now in HD!

Hopefully you read our review of the AppSumo Supercharge OS X bundle over the weekend. Sam has now been playing with the bundle for a few days — in fact, the only sound emanating from his padded room in the Download Squad bunker is the gentle, rhythmic chanting of sumo, sumo, sumo — and at the bargain price of $14, he really can’t see a reason to not buy the bundle.
Unless, of course, you win our giveaway! We have 10 copies of the excellent AppSumo Supercharge OS X bundle to give away. You can enter the giveaway by simply leaving a comment. Full terms and conditions follow after the break.

Art Lebedev’s Optimus Popularis delayed, but new Optimus Mini Six is on the way
We’ve always taken Art Lebedev‘s product launch forecasts with a grain handful of salt, so this doesn’t come as a surprise: the firm’s sub-$1,000 OLED keyboard won’t be out anytime soon. However, the second thing the indie peripheral design house revealed today makes us giddy despite our misgivings — before the full-sized Optimus Popularis comes to market, it’s planning to release a new miniature keypad like the Optimus mini three (pictured above) but with six keys inside. Still… is it bad if all we really want is an Optimus Aux prototype?

3 IT Tools You Can’t Live Without
As the economy continues to improve, allowing us to feel a sense of hope that the worst is behind us, it’s still critical for business owners to make sure they’re making smart decisions about technology. After all, if the recession taught us anything, it’s that we must be cognizant of cash flow, and make sure that our purchases are really worth the money.
Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets revealed in new video
While Android for phones is certainly not going away, the Honeycomb video features a bold statement, “Built Entirely for Tablet.” And the UI really shows it, as you can see in the screencap above. Gmail looks different, but that’s just one change. The whole interface underwent a radical change, to work with the tablet form factor. Other highlights from the video:
- A 3D-looking task switcher
- A massive software keyboard, quite reminiscent of a certain tablet that shall remain nameless (ahem)
- Rich widgets on a roomy homescreen — the Gmail widget looks basically like the current Gmail app
- A strong emphasis on Google Books, including “live” widgets (scroll through books on the widget)
- A tabbed browser, looking vaguely Chrome-like
- A panorama-like view of YouTube with a 3D “wall” of thumbnails
- Video-enabled Gtalk
- Solid zoom-and-pan action with the new Maps app, including 3D buildings. This seems similar to Maps v5, but it looks so much better on a tablet.
- Lots of futuristic-looking neon text

The Clock Is Set For A Facebook IPO By April, 2012
Today, Facebook announced that it raised a total of $1.5 billion in its latest round, giving the company a valuation of $50 billion. But it also disclosed something else: when it will likely go public. Buried at the bottom of its press release, it sets a date for when it expects to start filing public financial reports:

Facebook Just Landed $1.5B; Open Source Alternative Struggles To Raise $10,000
Facebook just raised $1.5 billion at a $50 billion valuation, having secured just south of $2.4 billion since the company was founded. Contrast that with The Appleseed Project, which aims to establish an open source, fully distributed and decentralized social networking software suite to rival Facebook. I just got an email from the project’s lead developer, Michael Chisari, prompting me to participate in their crowd-sourced fundraising efforts. So far, they’ve raised about $2,200 in 7 days, so they’re roughly $7,800 short of their $10,000 fundraising goal.

Facebook Raises $1.5 Billion At $50 Billion Valuation
Facebook has officially announced that it has just raised $1.5 billion in funding at a $50 billion valuation, according to a release issued today (we’ve embedded the release below). As stated in the release, the investment was broken into two parts. Goldman Sachs participated in the first round (via an offering to its non-U.S. clients in a fund), which totaled $1 billion. In December, DST and Goldman separately invested another $500 million into the social network. Both rounds gave Facebook a $50 billion valuation, says the company. This brings Facebook’s total funding to a staggering $2.336 billion.

Wolfram Alpha opens up API, makes it free for personal use
Wolfram Alpha is already very powerful; just the other day I used it to chart United States crime rates, because I wanted to see at a glance if they’ve been going up or down over the last few years.
And now, Alpha has gone on to make all of its rich data freely available via a new API for developers. This means it’s now easier than ever for developers to query Alpha and pull specific information back into their app for display to their users.
The API returns the result as a bunch of XML, which is very easy to slice and dice. You can either use Alpha’s built-in charts and graphs, or just get the numbers and display them as part of your app.
Better yet, the API is free for personal use. I’m not sure what exactly qualifies as “personal use”, but that does sound encouraging.
If this piqued your curiosity, you might be happy to know that Wolfram has put together a nice API Explorer. That’s what you see in the screenshot: You can just feed it with any query you would feed into the “regular” Web interface, and then analyze the XML it spews out. Now we just have to wait and see what apps developer community comes up with!

Apple’s App Store hits 10 billion downloads (update: we have a winner)
Now that the number of App Store downloads to iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads around the world has handily exceeded the population of Planet Earth, we can hopefully put this story to bed until they hit another factor of ten — and as unreasonable as 100 billion downloads sounds, we’ll bet it actually won’t take that long. That’s right: just a few days after kicking off its online counter, Apple’s officially hit the 10 billion mark, which is a whole lot of software any way you slice it. So, Android Market, you’re next?
Update: The lucky winner was Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK, who downloaded Paper Glider. PR after the break.

Yahoo to enable Google and Facebook sign-in on all its Web properties
The Yahoo Network of Web properties will soon let you sign in with your Facebook or Google credentials. The change will go live tomorrow, January 20, and effectively hammers the death knell for Yahoo’s continuing identity crisis.
Yahoo first rolled out a federated OpenID login to Flickr back in October, but Google was the only accepted third-party sign-in. With the upcoming change, you will be able to use Facebook and Google across all of Yahoo’s Web properties — which admittedly, after signing the death warrant of a bunch of its sites, is not a whole lot. Still, it means you’ll be able to customize your Yahoo search experience, comment on Flickr photos, and play with the awesome Pipes RSS remixing service, all from the comfort of your Facebook sign-in.
Incidentally, you won’t be able to use your Facebook or Google details to log into “desktop or mobile clients,” which presumably means Yahoo Instant Messenger.

Adobe initiative to let you easily clear ‘Flash cookies’ from your Mozilla or Google Web browser
In a strong, head-held-high missive, Adobe has detailed a new initiative to bring Flash local storage clearing to Web browser UIs. The new API, NPAPI ClearSiteData will let Firefox and Chrome users clear Flash’s Local Shared Objects, or ‘Flash cookies,’ in the same way that you currently clear cookies and temporary Internet files.
LSOs are very commonly used throughout the Web, but unlike conventional cookies they’re a little harder to delete. A lot of websites use them to track you across the Web, but they’re also used by sites like YouTube to store your video preferences.
The thing is, you’ve always been able to delete these LSOs, it’s just a bit of a pain in the ass. You have to visit the Flash Global Storage Settings Panel — and honestly, how many of you knew that? The difficulty of deleting LSOs led to the creation of evercookie, which is likely the main reason behind this new effort from Adobe.
As for when the new API will be rolled out, Chrome Dev will be the first, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. There’s no word of when it will be implemented in Firefox, but presumably it will be after the launch of Firefox 4. Opera and Internet Explorer — who knows!

Peanut butter and jelly. Gin and tonic. Peaches and cream. Some strange combinations make perfect sense paired, but how about the mouse and the PC gamepad? Those two items are what a Hong Kong peripheral manufacturer decided to combine, and the result was the Shogun Bros. A brief glimpse of Nokia’s popularity outside the Western world

It’s easy to forget just how different the customs of other nations are. While Americans carry dogs around in handbags, Koreans eat them. In England, we gurn; and in Spain, they throw tomatoes. We’re a world of completely disparate customs — yet somehow we can’t fathom that Nokia and the Symbian OS could be ahead of Apple and Google in the smartphone market.
It’s really quite crazy. It’s like everyone is just ignoring that huge, 40% slice of the pie that says “SYMBIAN.” Seriously, if you read more than one or two tech blogs, you’re led to believe that the iPhone dominates the smartphone market, with Android pulling ahead, or nipping at its heels, depending on which statistics you read. Who uses a BlackBerry, anyway? And Nokia… Nokia… hmm… that name rings a bell…
Now, take a look at China, which now has over 400,000,000 users on the Internet. As of June 2010, it also has 277,000,000 mobile Internet users, and almost all of those are Nokia/Symbian OS users. The chart above comes from a recent study by iResearch, and it shows that 65% of mobile Internet users visit the Nokia OVI store, and 58% visit the China Mobile-operated Mobile Market.
The point I’m trying to make is that, if you look beyond the continual PR orgies that Android and iOS enjoy, the world view is very different. If you look beyond your normal news sources, beyond your comfort zone and national borders, you will see that Nokia is a very serious contender indeed.

Sitting like rough and tawdry monarchs atop of the Android home screen and app launcher pile are LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher. We’ve reviewed Zeam Launcher, and looked at Go Launcher and QuickDesk, but somehow the two big boys have always escaped our critical eye. Well, no more!
Today we’re going to look at ADW.Launcher. It’s a free download, but there’s an ‘EX’ version that will cost you about $3. It shares a lot of its features with Zeam — and its looks are somewhat similar, too — but ADW is a lot more customizable. There are also a healthy number of ADW themes from third party developers, which provide easy access to ‘unique’ and sexy home screens.
Right then! Roll up your pants, it’s time to wade in.

Spam Clock illustrates the problem of link relevancy for Google, Bing, and other search engines
If you’ve wondered about the recent slow droop in search result relevancy, take a look at Spam Clock; watch the counter tick up, be amazed, or be appalled. Believe it or not, over 220 million spam Web pages have been created since January 1. That’s one million spam pages per hour, or about 270 new spam websites every second.
Spam Clock just scratches the surface of the problem, though. The real story is about spam and scraper websites making money from the hard work of other sites. These sites place highly in search results — sometimes above the real websites — and make money from Google AdSense — it’s all a little bit convoluted. Hopefully search giants like Google and Bing are working on a solution, but it may just be that the Web is finally growing too fast for conventional indexing.
This may also be one of the strongest signals that link sharing through Facebook, Twitter and other social sites is the way forward. Imagine searching an index of your friends’ favorite (‘liked’) websites, rather than a spam-ridden search engine index. Today, our social graphs might be too small to cover the entire Web, but in a few years…
Update: In an interview with Adotas, the CEO of Blekko (the company behind Spam Clock) says that the spam calculation is “an extrapolation based on the growth of the web and the fraction of spam that we’re seeing.”

Balance is a challenging physics Time Waster
Balance is a very simple game that manages to be surprisingly engaging.
All you have to do is just balance the stick on your virtual finger. I call it a “stick” for lack of a better name, but it seems to be a rudimentary 2D representation of a rotating plate, or a platform with a weight on it. You use your mouse to move your hand and you just have to keep moving it in the right direction so the stick doesn’t lose its balance.
There are no real levels in this game – by that I mean that you never get to rest when a level is over and then start again all fresh and alert. When you manage to balance the stick for around 10 seconds (I tried counting, there’s no indicator I could see), you simply level up. Every time you level up, the stick gets a tad shorter, and your task gets a bit harder. It seems like a really simple game at first, but when the stick gets really short, it starts to get pretty challenging. I managed to get up to level 10, so I’m not sure what happens when the stick runs out. Maybe you win, or maybe you just get a new stick, far superior to the one you started out with (tell me in the comments).
Another thing I liked about this game is the fact you can easily play it with your trackpad. Up until recently I was using the trackpad on my laptop exclusively, and it’s nice to have a game that doesn’t give an advantage to people who have a real mouse. It was even a bit easier with the trackpad!
All in all, a lovely way to distract yourself for a few minutes. You can fantasize about being a juggler in the circus while you play (not that I did, of course).

Thanks, K!
Update: Tweaked the headline. The accessories have been listed on Moto’s website but are just now in Verizon’s system. Thanks, Kellen!

How would you change Apple’s 11-inch MacBook Air?
Apple may not be much on the idea of a 7-inch tablet, but an 11-inch ultraportable? Now that’s an idea even the engineers in Cupertino could dig. When we reviewed the 11-inch MacBook Air, we found an awful lot to love — that all-Flash design is definitely a boon, and the more-mobile-than-mobile design is sure to be loved by road warriors and light packers everywhere. But it’s still (comparatively) sluggish, and it’s lacking a backlit keyboard. Enough from us, though — we’re here to hear what kind of changes you would make. Would you have thrown a faster chip in there at the expense of the case? Boosted the screen resolution? Added an SD card slot? Bit the bullet and tossed in USB 3.0? Comments are open below — dive on it!

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal will ship with 2D version of Unity for older and weaker computers
It’s amazing it took this long for Canonical to confirm, but it seems that Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal will ship with both a fancy, OpenGL-accelerated version of Unity, and a flatter, slightly more sedate 2D version for older, unaccelerated hardware. A couple more images of the 2D UI are available after the break.
Given the fact that one of the most common targets for Linux installations is on older, ‘reclaimed’ hardware, it would have been surprising if Ubuntu didn’t ship with a 2D window manager. Canonical’s Bill Filler also mentions that “many ARM platforms fall into this category,” though we’re not quite sure which ARM devices he has in mind. Most low-power devices are either netbooks or smartphones — and netbooks are Atom x86, not ARM (at least for now), and a lot of smartphones have hardware acceleration via OpenGL ES (and who puts Ubuntu on a smartphone, anyway?)
Basically, this is great news for people that want to put Ubuntu 11.04 on old laptops, netbooks and desktops with awful integrated graphics — or simply those that don’t like the 3D version of Unity! It’s also great news for those that virtualize their Ubuntu installations under VMWare or VirtualBox, both of which have a hard time with 3D acceleration.
[It seems, at the time of publishing, that Bill Filler's blog post has vanished. Maybe he was jumping the gun; or perhaps something else is afoot...]

Motoblur coming to Xoom as software update, still considered Google flagship product? (update)
Maybe you thought the Motorola Xoom would be devoid of — or dare we say, spared from — a coat of Motoblur. Being the inaugural Honeycomb device, you’d expect Google to keep the tablet as vanilla as possible (e.g. G1, Nexus One, Nexus S). Indeed, Android’s director of engineering Dave Burke tells CNET UK that Xoom is a flagship product for Mountain View, but in the same reported meeting, Motorola’s Jonathan Nattrass said Motoblur will be coming to the tablet as a software update. In what form? We don’t know, but if we had to guess, it’s gonna be much more isolated that previous devices — special widgets, perhaps, and services for backup or tracking a lost slate. Let’s play wait-and-see on this one, at least until the top bar gets a cartoonish blue aesthetic.
Update: Motorola reached out to Phandroid to say that, yes, this is a “Google Experience Device” and as such, you should expect the platform and UI to be Google’s. Doesn’t exactly explain where Nattrass got his talking points, but for now let’s call it a strong rebuttal and move on. Certainly we’ll have a clearer picture once we can actually try Xoom / Honeycomb out for ourselves.

As Rummble?s CEO Is Ousted, The Story Of A European Startup Unravels
Rummble, one the UK’s oldest location-based reviews and social network which actually pre-dated Foursquare, has had its CEO removed by the board and now faces a radical shift away from it’s consumer-facing service of four years towards a Business-to-Business future. What we know on the ground right now is that CEO Andrew Scott has departed the company; the existing staff remain in place and Rummble, while maintaining its web site and smartphone apps, is set to move forward towards a B2B strategy which is not white-label, but based on leveraging its core technology. Over the past week TechCrunch Europe has been delving into the story of why Rummble ended up in this situation, and where it goes from here. I have been covering Rummble for over 5 years. I had them pitch at startups events even before I joined TechCrunch and I’ve written about 45 posts mentioning them in the last three years. So I guess I feel I know the company quite well. So – to be blunt – what the hell happened?

Ballmer discusses Microsoft’s battle against Apple’s Mac App Store, and official PC support for Kinect
Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, chatted to the BBC at CES about a wide range of topics, including competition from Apple, the burgeoning ‘appification’ of everything, and Kinect for the PC.
When asked about official support for Kinect on the PC, Ballmer says Microsoft “will support that in a formal way in the right time” — a cop-out, basically. His impish grin does suggest it’s definitely on the cards, though, and hopefully sooner rather than later.
Regarding Apple and its recently-launched Mac App Store, Ballmer seems totally unfazed. “The biggest app ecosystem in the world is certainly not the Mac, not the iPad, and certainly not the iPhone. The biggest app ecosystem in the world is the [Windows] PC. There’s no question about that.”
Rather astutely, Ballmer goes on to identify an ecosystem that’s even more important than Mac, iOS or Windows: the Web! “The Web, and particularly as the Web moves to HTML5, which I think we’re doing beautifully in our new Internet Explorer 9, that’s the other big base app.” In other words, Windows is by far the largest software platform, and IE9 is in a great position for the upcoming Web app explosion.
It’s rare to see Steve quite so calm and collected, and even charming. Perhaps the British accent of the interviewer has a soothing effect…

Cocoon hands on: the one-shot solution to private and secure Firefox browsing
A lot has been said about safe, secure surfing in recent months. Firesheep brought the necessity for HTTPS (and WPA-encrypted WLAN) into the limelight, and the Gawker Media breach reminded all of us that no one is safe.
The truth is, if you want to stay secure on the Web, you have to take a proactive stance. You need to install LastPass or KeePass, and using HTTPSEverywhere is a very good idea too. A good anti-virus suite like Microsoft Security Essentials is a necessity, and get into the habit of regularly scanning with Malwarebytes.
Alternatively, you can scrap everything and just use Cocoon, a service that proposes to solve all of your privacy and security problems in one fell swoop. There is a 45-day free trial, and it requires Firefox 3.6.13. I suggest you install it, and then read on!

How to hide the Ribbon menu in Microsoft Office applications

This week’s series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.
The new Ribbon interface on Office 2007 and 2010 is quite fancy, and once you get used to it, it’s a lot of fun to use. One of its few downsides is that it’s tall – far taller than a “traditional” menu. If you’re working on a netbook or are otherwise pressed for screen space, it can sometimes be handy to collapse the Ribbon and make it as compact as a regular menu.
To collapse it, simply double-click one of the Ribbon’s tabs, such as “Home”. The whole thing will instantly shrink down to the line of tabs. Clicking a tab will temporarily expand it back. If you’d rather do the same thing using the keyboard, simply hit Ctrl+F1 (that’s what I normally do).

Google defends its dropping of H.264, announces WebM plug-ins for IE and Safari
After Google’s announcement last week that it would be dropping H.264 HTML5 video support, the tech world exploded. As the dust settled — as the fragments of brainless bile drifted slowly back to the tech blog morass — it became clear that there were two evenly-split sides. Half of the tech world, spearheaded by TechCrunch’s slavering Siegler, felt that Google had figuratively defecated on its own so-called open “standards”. The other half, led by a vanguard of slightly more intelligent and beardy bloggers, fully supported Google’s decision.
Anyway, that aside, if you were worried about not being able to watch YouTube in your IE or Safari browsers, don’t worry: Google will release WebM plug-ins for browsers that don’t natively support it. The same blog post goes into more detail about why Google decided to drop H.264 support, and how this isn’t a power-grabbing move by the big G.
The truth is Google is only ever going to look out for Google; it’s utter lunacy that Google would ever do something that scuppered its own chances of survival. Google needs an open Web to thrive, and that’s exactly what WebM provides over H.264. Imagine standing in Google’s shoes for a moment: you run YouTube, the third biggest site on the Internet. One day, out of the blue, the H.264 consortium decides to increase its licensing fees, instantly making the operation of YouTube untenable. What do you do now? Switching to an open and free codec simply makes sense.
Google’s entire lifeblood is indexing content created by you and me — and while open standards empower the end-user to produce almost limitless amounts of delicious content, closed, proprietary standards put power in the hands of publishers. Don’t ever forget that the democratization of information brought to us by the Web has only been possible due to the open standards like TCP/IP and HTML.
At the end of the day, you have to choose whether you want Google to index your entire life story, or whether you want to be spoon fed vertically-integrated media from just a handful of multinational mega publishers. On the one hand, you retain a few important freedoms — like the ability to speak your mind on an open forum — and on the other, corporations decide everything for you. It’s not a tough choice.

Firefox 4 tentatively scheduled for a February release
After its fair share of delays, Firefox 4 looks set for a late-February release. Posting on the Mozilla Planning mailing list, the Director of Platform Engineering, Damon Sicore, thanked Firefox 4′s “tired and stressed” developers, and urged them to hang on, to produce one last burst of awesomeness and “ship the best possible product.”
There are now 160 hard blockers (serious bugs) left in Firefox 4, all of which need to be squashed before a release candidate can be released. Previous releases of Firefox have squashed about 100 hard blockers in six weeks, so February release is definitely going to be tight — but here’s hoping!
If you want to do your bit, and you’re not a programmer, the best thing you can do is grab the latest version of Firefox 4 and take part in the test pilot studies. The latest beta of Firefox 4 really is quite good — and if, by chance, you stumble across a bug, report it.

Microsoft testing new “Be what’s next” Metro- and IE9-inspired homepage
It’s been a long time coming, but Microsoft is finally testing a new Be what’s next homepage. To enable the new look, you need to visit http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/preview/default.aspx.
The layout is strongly reminiscent of Windows Phone 7′s Metro UI, with not a single rounded corner to be found. There are also some design elements from Internet Explorer 9, such as the ‘cut off’ back and forward buttons — and indeed, a link to the IE9 beta is front and center on the new layout. Most notably, however, the homepage features two completely different panels for both Work and Home solutions. If you click the Work tab on the right, the entire page slides over, with bars and text that reform in what can only be described as elastic beauty.
So far it seems to only be the homepage that has received the Metro treatment, but presumably, if this new layout is well received, the rest of Microsoft’s Web properties will receive a similar overhaul.

Kinect combos Street Fighter IV, fires single-fisted boomsticks at the FPS crowd (video)
Oh sure, we’ve seen the Kinect assist a hadouken or two, but that wasn’t the same: here, the YouTube user who brought us Call of Duty via Wiimote, Nunchuk and Kinect is throwing fireballs and taking names in the real game. Demize2010 manipulated the FAAST emulator to recognize a variety of virtual martial arts gestures, including the infamous dragon uppercut and whirlwind kick — giving him everything he needs for a flowchart victory with only his bare hands.
Meanwhile, one Bill Maxwell has taken the Kinect and made it recognize his fist, the better to control first-person shooter games with requiring an Wiimote intermediary. He’s developed a “high-speed kinematic tracker” called MaxFPS that monitors his hand’s position in real time, allowing him to move, turn, jump, and reload with quick swipes of his paw. How do you shoot? Why, by punching those baddies’ lights out, of course. See it on video after the break.

Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant will get Froyo tomorrow, says T-Mobile CMO
Sorry, gents, but your conspiracy theories are wholly kaput — not only is a Samsung Galaxy S getting Android 2.2 stateside, but the speedy software update will start rolling out tomorrow on T-Mobile USA. That’s the word direct from T-Mo chief marketing officer Cole Brodman, who tossed the news to PC Magazine this afternoon, saying that the delay was a “quality control and timing issue.” Apparently, there’s extra work involved in skinning the operating system and adding exclusive apps like WiFi calling — though he didn’t confirm either would specifically appear in the Vibrant’s build of Froyo. Here’s some more welcome news, though: the gentleman promised that in general, Android updates on T-Mobile will be more prompt from now on, as the firm’s shooting to update all phones to new versions within five months of Google making source code available. Does that mean we should expect some Gingerbread men by May? We’re not totally sure, but we imagine that T-Mobile’s rivals aren’t sitting still — we’ll probably hear some fascinating, captivating and totally epic news about Froyo any minute now.

Trend Micro thinks Android’s open source makes it less secure than iOS; wrong!

In an odd move that must surely raise concerns of lucidity, the Trend Micro chairman, Steve Chang, has claimed that the open-source nature of Android makes it easier to hack than iOS: “Android is open-source, which means the hacker can also understand the underlying architecture and source code.”
News just in: the open-source-is-less-secure myth was dispelled more than a decade ago. Take a look at Linux, Apache, Firefox, or Chrome — four huge open-source projects, and all many times more secure than their closed-source brethren (Windows, IIS, Internet Explorer). Open source projects are more secure than closed-source projects due to peer and code review, and vested interest! Trend Micro fails to appreciate that while maybe a handful of people have seen the iOS source, thousands have eyeballed Android’s innards to look for bugs. Don’t forget that Android is also based on Linux, which must be one of the most rigorously tested pieces of software ever made.
Later in the interview, Chang even goes on to mention the iOS sandbox “that isolates the platform”… which Android also has!
Anyway, Chang’s ultimate point is that as smartphones become more intrinsic to our everyday life, their security becomes an ever-growing concern. Smartphones need to be treated as real computers, and locked down in the same way; either by the platform, or with third-party software. There will come a point, in the next few years, when smartphone OSes receive even more attention from malware authors than Windows — we need to be ready.

US Cellular’s Froyo updates detailed — Desire, Mesmerize in early February
Have an Android phone on U.S. Cellular and want to know when to expect your Froyo update? We’ve got the goods. If this chart we’ve been handed rings true, the HTC Desire and Samsung Mesmerize (Galaxy S) stand to get Android 2.2 in early February, with the LG Apex following up sometime later in the first quarter.
The Samsung Acclaim just got its update — you can find it and all future upgrades here.
And, yes, this lends more fuel to the fire that Samsung has Galaxy S Froyo updates waiting in the wings — the question is why nobody in the U.S. them yet. But it certainly is starting to look like we’ll see them soon. Thanks, anon!

Android 2.3 Gingerbread running on iPhone 3G (video)
Nick Pack, an iDroid developer, has just posted a video of an iPhone 3G running Android 2.3 Gingerbread (video embedded after the break). It’s pretty sluggish, and the video quality is poor, but the proof of concept is clear: it’s certainly Android 2.3 on an iPhone.
The same developer went on to add that it’s still very early days for the port, and that the “iPhone 4 port is under way and progressing steadily.” Of course, once it runs on the iPhone 4, the Android 2.3 on the iPad is just the tiniest of baby steps away.
While a public release of Android 2.3 for iPhone is probably a few weeks away, a stable build of Android 2.2 for iPhone is available from the iDroid site; installation is pretty easy, and it runs quite well too.

CorelDRAW video tutorial: Make a Polaroid-like image in five minutes
When most people hear the words “vector graphics”, the first thing that comes to mind is Adobe Illustrator. While Illustrator is a wonderful application, it’s certainly not the only game in town: I’ve been using CorelDRAW for several years now, and I just love it.
I’m not a graphics pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do need to turn out a few pretty pixels here and there for my day job. If you’re just thinking about getting into vector graphics, or if you’ve tried Illustrator and it proved too daunting, CorelDRAW might be just what you need.
Rather than just talk about CorelDRAW or write a tutorial, I figured it would be best to show it off in a short video. I took an image of my awesome cat, Ivan, and made it into a Polaroid-like snapshot. It took me less than five minutes, without any templates or saved settings. To see how I did it, hit Play after the fold.
By the way, this is the first of four CorelDRAW tutorials to be published in the next few weeks. If you’d like to see specific aspects of CorelDRAW in action, feel free to let me know in the comments!

Hanger is a fun, gruesome physics Time Waster
The rules for Hanger are quite simple: You’ve got to reach the end of each level merely by swinging back and forth and grappling with your rope. You use LEFT and RIGHT to swing back and forth; once you gather enough momentum, hit SPACE to let go and fling yourself on; then hit SPACE again to latch onto the ceiling once more.
Careful, though: If you swing too high and hit the ceiling, you start losing body parts. The legs go first, then the arms, and then a few other random tidbits. That’s where the gore comes in – when you lose a body part, you start bleeding. But it’s not that bad really: You can keep on playing right until you lose all body parts, and there’s no time pressure.
It takes a few minutes to master the physics of the game, but it’s really quite fun once you get the hang of it (see what I did there?).

How to use custom DNS servers on your Windows computer

This week we’re running a series of posts that tackle common Windows networking issues, and some tips and tricks that might speed up or improve your network stability. You can find more tech tips in our Tips index.
There are plenty of good reasons to use a custom DNS server on your computers. Some services — like Google DNS — can provide a speed boost to your Web browsing. Other services — like OpenDNS and Sunbelt ClearCloud — can protect you and your family from inappropriate content and malware. So how do you set them up?
The best place to program a custom DNS server is on your router — where it can take care of every computer on your network. If you’re not comfortable poking around your router settings, however, you can make the necessary change on your computers instead.
Start by opening the Start Menu (hit the Windows Flag key!), typing ncpa.cpl, and pressing enter (as detailed in our previous how-to). Many computers have more than one network adapter — like the plug-in and wireless ones in a laptop, for example. More than likely, only one is actually connecting you to the Internet.

The USPTO Is Reviewing Facebook?s Trademark For ?Facebook.? Wait, What?
So Facebook has been a bit aggressive with their trademarks in the past, most recently filing to trademark the word “Face.” The social network has also gone after companies that have “book” in their name. But the tables may have turned on Facebook, if long-distance calling company Talkbook has its way. As All Facebook reported last week, Talkbook filed a ?petition for cancellation? to the USPTO claiming that the social network’s trademark on ?The Facebook,? was fraudulent because it dropped the “the” from the trademark. You can read all the gory details in the filing here (courtesy of DomainNameWire). And according to the USPTO, the current status of Facebook’s trademark for “Facebook,” now states that “a cancellation proceeding is pending at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.”

Fisker Karma now set for production in March, deliveries this spring — maybe
Still hanging on to your Fisker Karma pre-order slip despite the decidedly sizeable boost in MSRP, up to $95,900? Well, we now have an idea of when you might actually have a chance of getting a car. The most recent estimates we heard indicated deliveries starting in late 2010, but that obviously didn’t happen. Now Fisker is indicating that full production is set to begin in March, about two months from now, with people getting their rides “soon after.” Initial examples of the car are to be produced in Europe, Finland to be exact, and they’ll need the services of a fairly substantial boat to get across the Atlantic before they become available here. But, still, a potential release date just a few months away is a reasonably encouraging thing — and you can’t deny the car is still quite a looker.

Windows 7 SP1 download due today, says Microsoft Technet post

We reported earlier that the release of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 could be coming soon. Its impending arrival seemed to be heralded by the availability of a prerequisite installer update delivered recently via Windows Update. Now, however, there’s an indication that we could be just hours away from being able to download Windows 7 SP1.
A Microsoft Technet blog — albeit a Russian one we’ve had to run through translation sites — indicates that “pack will be publicly available tomorrow.” The post discusses virtualization improvements in Windows 7 SP1 and Server 2008 R2 SP1 and was published January 13, 2011. If the author’s statement is accurate, that would definitely make today SP1 release day.
Update: According to Tom Warren at WinRumors, the public download isn’t coming today. Rather, the original post was announcing the availability of the Windows 7 SP1 RTM to OEMs today.
